<< Category of battery and its features
>>
Batteries are classified broadly into "Chemical battery"
and "Physical battery." They gain electrical energy via
chemical change and physical change respectively. Chemical battery
is, in addition, divided into "Primary battery" and "Secondary
battery." Battery which cannot be recharged is called Primary
battery, and Secondary battery for rechargeable battery.
<< Category of battery >>
Figure 5.7 Category of battery
As backup battery, Lead-acid battery, NiCd battery, Ni-MH battery
are adopted to NSP power supply.
<< Lead-acid battery >>
Lead-acid battery uses dioxide for positive electrode, metallic
lead for negative electrode, and dilute sulfuric acid for electrolyte.
Demerits are Lower energy density (power per unit weight) and short
lifetime but, cost performance is high enough. This battery is frequently
used due to low cost if its volume does not matter.
Figure 5.8 Energy density of various secondary batteries
<< Nickel-cadmium battery >>
Nickel-cadmium battery uses nickel oxide for positive electrode,
cadmium compound for negative electrode, and solution of potassium
hydroxide with good ion conductive property. It has the advantage
of stability and economic efficiency, and has been used widely in
portable electric equipments until recently. Its features are, in
addition to easy handling, excellent characteristics such as low-temperature
characteristics, anti-overcharge, discharge property, and long lifetime.
"Memory effect" occurs according to operating condition,
but recovery can be gained by repeating entire discharge and charging
several times.
<< Nickel-metal hydride battery >>
Nickel-metal hydride battery uses nickel oxide for positive electrode,
hydrogen storing alloy for negative electrode, and solution of potassium
hydroxide.
It has compatibility with Nickel cadmium battery as their voltages
are very close each other, and it has high energy density which
is approx. 2 times high comparing with the same volume of nickel
cadmium battery.
This battery is said to be environment-friendly because Compared
with Nickel cadmium battery. Nickel-metal hydride battery is apt
to decrease its capacity due to large self-discharge. However, as
with memory effect, recovery can be gained by repeating entire discharge
and charging several times.
* What is "Memory effect?"
When repeatedly charging a battery of shallow depth of discharge
(status that the battery is not discharged enough), battery capability
decreases temporarily due to
internal chemical reaction resulting in poor discharge capacity.
This phenomenon is specific to Nickel cadmium battery and Nickel-metal
hydride battery, especially to Nickel cadmium battery.
Figure 5.9 Memory effect
<< Recycling of battery >>
Rechargeable batteries use rare resources such as Nickel [Ni], Cadmium
[Cd], Cobalt [Co], Lead [Pb] as major materials.
In order to utilize finite rare resources like those efficiently
"Reuse of resources" by recycling performs great effect.
For example, alloy of nickel and iron goes to stainless material,
and cadmium is utilized as material of new NiCd battery. We would
be obliged if you cooperate in recycling of used rechargeable batteries
for effective utilization of rare metals.
Recycling identification marks below are attached on battery respectively.

(PS2538L, PS2565L, BS05A-P24/2.2L)
BS05A-P24/2.2L (PS2698L) is vertical/horizontal
common use type that can be installed into 5 inch bay. This
type is suitable to an application that the unit shall not
be touched except periodic maintenance after installation.
Vertical type (PS2565L) and Horizontal type (PS2538L) battery
packages have been integrated to BS05A-P24/2.2L(PS2698L) which
is vertical/horizontal common use.
<Charge mode [Constant current/voltage charge
mode]>
To charge with constant current mode at initial charging, and
switch to constant voltage mode when the battery voltage reaches
the preset voltage level.
This mode achieves relatively quick charging as well as prevents
overcharge. |

<< Removable battery package for Nonstop power supply
>>
(RBS01A-P24/2.2L/RBP01A-P24/2.2L)
Removable battery package is hot-swappable
at front side of PC. It provides DC power to Nonstop power
supply NSP series.
RBS01A-P24/2.2L is a set of battery package and frame, and
RBP01A-P24/2.2L is a battery package only for replacement.
Features
- Removable battery package just fits into 5 inch bay. Uninterruptibility
and no blackout environment in computer system is available
with (Nonstop power supply + Removable battery package).
- Hot-swappable. Battery package is hot-swappable during
computer operation. System halt for battery package replacement
is not required.
- Reduction of TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Simple operation;
Just pull out and push in the battery package at front side
of 5 inch bay for replacement. No special operators are needed
to contribute greatly to reduction of TCO.

(BS04A-NC24/0.7)
Charging unit and nickel-cadmium battery are integrated into a
battery package for NSP7 as charging unit of NSP7 is removed out.
<Charge mode>
[Constant current mode]
To charge with constant current from the outset to the end. The
voltage rises as charge progresses and the current decreases so
that charging voltage needs to be increased gradually. This mode
is fundamental charge mode and charging is proceeded in about 10
hour rate in general.

<Lead-acid battery charger (PS2697)>
For NSP7, Lead-acid battery (embedded type battery and removable
battery) is acceptable as well as NiCd battery. When Lead-acid battery
is used Lead-acid battery charger shall be connected between power
supply and Lead-acid battery (Model: PS2697).
